Requirement:3.13. The library director completes no fewer than eight (8) hours of continuing education per year. All other full time library support staff complete no fewer than three (3) hours of continuing education per year.

How is Continuing Education Approved?
- By July 30 annually, each library sends WVLC a list of currently employed full time support staff.
- Continuing Education hours are used for compliance with Section 3.13. must be approved in advance by WVLC.
- The "Continuing Education Request for Approval" form posted on the WVLC web site must be submitted at least 14 days in advance of the event.
- Full time support staff may earn three hours of continuing education credit at one event.
- Directors must attend at least two types of events, for example, one workshop and one conference to earn eight hours of credit.
- Proof of attendance must be provided to WVLC. This may be a registration receipt, attendance sheet, certificate, etc. Upon receipt of the proof of attendance by the WVLC, the hours will be recorded.
- WVLC will announce pre-approval of some events. For these events, it is not necessary to submit the "Continuing Education Request for Approval" form. However, it is still necessary to provide proof of attendance.
- At least once during the year, WVLC will send a status report on continuing education to each library.
What is Considered Continuing Education?
Continuing education opportunities include both formal and informal learning situations that are designed to keep library personnel abreast of knowledge and development within the field, enhance job competence, or lead to specialization in new areas of librarianship. Full time library support staff should work closely with the library director to meet the continuing education requirement. Because of the scope of librarianship, it is important to attend workshops and presentations on a broad range of topics.
Continuing education provides include, but are not limited to:
- Colleges and universities
- West Virginia Library Commission
- West Virginia Library Association
- Service Center Libraries
- Individual libraries that have staff development programs pre-approved by WVLC
- Consortia such as MLN, NORLN
- American Library Association; Public Library Association
