WVLC Special Services
The Special Services Division of the Library Commission is part of the National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress. This free library service loans recorded books and magazines, Braille books and magazines to residents who are unable to read or use standard print because of a visual or physically impairment. With a Doctor's certification reading disabilities also are a qualifying condition.
In addition to the NLS provided services, Special Services records two state magazines, Goldenseal and Wonderful West Virginia to circulate to registered patrons throughout the State. The Library Commission also provides large print books as well as a collection of descriptive videos to patrons. The Library Commission in cooperation with the National Federation of the Blind provides Newsline, an automated newspaper service that offers national and local newspapers via the telephone.
As part of the Library of Congress, National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, the Library Commission acts as the Regional Library for the State of West Virginia and with the help of three subregional libraries located throughout the state circulate these materials.
